What is cold storage?

This term simply refers to hodling Bitcoin offline, rather than online (digitally) in a "hot" wallet.

As it doesn’t rely on the internet in any way, cold storage is often thought to be the safest method of storing Bitcoin because it can’t be easily hacked.

Types of cold storage

  • Hardware wallets - E.g. USB-style devices
  • Paper wallets - Printed with a QR code for your Bitcoin address and private key

How to use cold storage

Many people using cold storage will typically keep a small amount of Bitcoin in a hot wallet (online), with the bulk of their portfolio being kept offline.
